maptimeLEX July 2015 Meetup

For our July meetup we’re going to be having a change of venue and format. We’ll be meeting Wednesday, July 15th at 7:00PM at Third Street Stuff. The theme for the night is maptimeWET. More specifically, we’ll be talking water and maps! Guerrilla Cartography, the folks behind the volunteer-driven Food: An Atlas have returned with a new call for proposals, this time on the theme of water. For this meetup we’ll be getting together to brainstorm a maptimeLEX map proposal for the forthcoming Water: An Atlas. Proposals are due September 1st, but it’s not too early to play Marco Polo with that next big cartographic idea. So come join and let’s sea what we can come up with!

A laptop will be helpful, but not necessary this time around. If you don’t have access to one, but would like to use one, please let us know and will get you set up.

maptimeLEX June 2015 Meetup

In this @maptimeLex, Rich Donohue (@rgdonohue) will (re-)introduce our community to the D3.js visualization library and demonstrate its integration into a larger web mapping workflow. Drawing upon Andy Woodruff’s (@awoodruff) excellent @maptimeBoston presentation (http://maptimeboston.github.io/d3-maptime/), Rich will explain the library’s implementation when used to create a simple, interactive web map. He’ll then step back to consider where D3 fits within a mapping process using various tools to prepare data, simplify and aggregate geometries, visually render geospatial information within a browser, and build an interface to invite users to more fully engage with the map. Participants will then be supported through a collaborative, workshop-style exercise to make their own interactive maps using D3.

A laptop will be necessary to follow along. If you don’t have access to one, please let us know and will get you set up. Although a basic knowledge of HTML, CSS, and/or JavaScript will be helpful, they’re not essential.

tl;dr

  • What: D3js, Webmaps, and You
  • When: 7:00-9:00, Wednesday, June 24th
  • Where: CirrusMio, 154 Constitution St, Lexington, KY 40507

If you’re more used to desktop GIS with ESRI products or QGIS, come out and learn! If you’re JavaScript wizard, we want you too! A laptop will be necessary for following along. If you don’t have access to one, feel free to contact us and we’ll work to hook you up with a computer for the meetup.

If you have any questions or concerns, don’t hesitate to drop us an email or contact us via twitter. We look forward to seeing you on 6/24!

maptimeLEX May 2015 Meetup

Don’t adjust your glasses! Indeed, you’re seeing things correctly. Because of a last-minute change in April Mike Dillion’s introduction to TurfJS is the topic for our May meetup. TurfJS is a powerful, new JavaScript library for doing geospatial analysis in the browser. We’ll be meeting at 6:45 PM on Wednesday, April 15th at CirrusMio (154 Constitution St).

Grow the buffest buffers, aggregate point data to the hexiest hex-bins, and find the centroid you’re looking for all without expensive, resource-intensive GIS software. Through a project code named “Astroturf Ninja,” Mike will get us going with TurfJS.

What Astroturf and a ninja might look like together

While a basic understanding of GIS and JavaScript concepts won’t hurt, newbies of all stripes are welcome. RSVP on Eventbrite and let’s tread the greener pasture together and learn TurfJS!
