Maptime and Open Twin Cities Map-stravaganza

Open data + CartoDB = Map-stravaganza!

This month, we’ll be holding a joint meeting with Open Twin Cities to bring together the power of open data with the visual thrill of maps! Come ready to learn about open data, maps, and how you can combine the two to make exciting visualizations.

The plan:

  1. Maptime MSP will demo CartoDB, a powerful but easy-to-use mapping tool.
  2. Open Twin Cities will demo some of the Minnesota open data portals.
  3. We’ll break up into teams and start mapping some of our favorite open data sets together.
  4. At the end of the meetup, we’ll demo our maps and choose our favorites! (Prizes may be involved.)

Parking options:

  • 19th Ave Ramp ($7 for 2-3 hours);
  • 21st Ave Ramp ($7 for 2-3 hours);
  • Surface lot at 5th and 21st that is a flat rate of $4; and
  • Meter parking available within a few blocks.

Transit options:
There are many bus routes that stop near the West Bank campus, as well as the West Bank Station on the Green Line.

Borchert Map Library Tour

We will meet for pizza (thanks CartoDB! :smile:), and presentations in the Wilson Library sub-basement, room S30B.

After the presentations, Ryan Mattke will give us a tour of the Borchert Map Library (also in the sub-basement, room S76). Everyone is welcome to bring cameras/phones to take pictures of the space and/or the maps.

If we have enough time, the library has a large format scanner on-site. Ryan will help us scan maps. If you’d like to scan a map, or maps, please bring a flash drive along!

What We Are Working On

We will start off with short talks (5 min) about something that you are working on, and then the remainder of the meeting will be time to work or collaborate on projects.

Presentations and projects are not expected to be polished, just an introduction to something that you are working on. People can present for various reasons (and you don’t have to specify yours..): To get feedback / critique, to ask for help or assistance on part of a project, to find collaborators for a project, and to show others work that you are proud of.

Please email david.fawcett at gmail.com if you are interested in giving a quick talk. We are looking for any map-related projects and really want to see examples of what you, Maptime MSP members are working on.

Everyone is welcome! No matter what your experience level is, if you are interested in maps, this is the group for you. If you don’t have a project of your own to work on, you can always edit OpenStreetMap data and improve the map.

Pizza will be provided by CartoDB!

January - Python

Enjoy live music and homemade cookies, network, ride the train, and share your love of all things map!

Kick off the New Year in style… Maptime style! We’ll be meeting at the Department of Revenue’s Stassen Building in St. Paul over the lunch hour to accommodate our members who have trouble making it to evening events. The Stassen Building is on the green line, across the street from the Robert Street Station. Check out the Department of Revenue’s website for more detailed driving directions and parking information.

January’s session is all about Python! The programming language Python has been around for over a quarter century and in that time has amassed users and enthusiasts from all industries, including of course, GIS. Python’s popularity comes from its simplicity, speed and flexibility. Users benefit from the automation of geoprocessing and data management tasks. This automation makes repetitive processes easier, faster, and more accurate.

Python users, ranging from beginner to advanced, will discuss how they got started with Python, challenges faced and overcome, and challenges still looming.

After the presentations, we’ll have time for discussions, sharing of projects, and anything else that comes up. As always, beginners are welcome, and don’t forget to bring a laptop!

December - Edit-a-thon

We’ll be meeting in Minneapolis at CoCo Coworking in Uptown and work on OpenStreetMap (OSM), and conduct our own OSM Edit-a-thon. We’ll have a special guest speaker (TBD soon) show us some trade secrets on OpenStreetMap.

If you’re unfamiliar with editing OSM, no worries! We’ll go through the basics together, and learn how to make edits for the first time!

If you’re up for more socializing after Maptime, we’ll likely head to a nearby bar to continue the conversations over drinks. If the bar isn’t on OpenStreetMap, you can bet it will be there by the end of the day! After the presentation, we’ll have time for editing, discussions, sharing projects that we’re working on, work through any questions from OSM/our projects, and anything else that comes up!

We’ll have pizza and refreshments, courtesy of CartoDB. As always, beginners are welcome and don’t forget to bring a laptop!
