This event was originally scheduled for 2/18. Because of poor transit conditions throughout Lexington, we have cancelled and reschedule the meetup for 2/25.
We’re happy to announce our February meetup! Please join us Wednesday, Febrauary 25th from 6:45-9:30ish at CirrusMio when Jessi Breen will introduce us to QGIS.
QGIS is a powerful free and open source software (FOSS) GIS application that allows you create, view, and edit spatial data, create beautiful cartographic masterpieces, and carry out spatial analysis. It is a useful tool to have in your mapping arsenal and best of all, it’s free! Jessi will get us going with the basics of working with data in QGIS and give us peek into its powerful spatial analysis capabilities.
Seats are limited so be sure to RSVP on Eventbrite.
We also recommend downloading the latest version of QGIS. If you’ve got Windows, OSX, Linux, or even Android on a tablet, you’re good to go!
In line with the general spirit of maptime, we want this and all our meetups to be welcoming to people of all backgrounds and skill levels. If you’ve never used or heard of GIS, come out and learn! If you’ve got your GISP certificate, we want you too! A laptop will be necessary for following along. If you don’t have access to one, feel free to contact us and we’ll work to hook you up with a computer for the meetup.
If you have any questions or concerns, don’t hesitate to drop us an email or contact us via twitter. We look forward to seeing you on 2/18!
We hope everyone had a great December and that 2015 has gotten off to a fabulous start. Hard to believe there are only 50 weeks left in the year! Anyway, we’re having our first meetup of the year on Wednesday, January 21st from 6:45-9:30ish at Awesome Inc.
We’re going to be learning about an amazing little JavaScript mapping library called LeafletJS. We’ll talk about it more at the meetup, but you can use it to turn your webmap up to 11. And because January 21st is Squirrel Appreciation Day, we’ll celebrate our cute rodent friends by internet mapping them. Look out cats!
Seats are limited so be sure to RSVP on Eventbrite.

If you’ve never written a line of HTML, CSS, or JavaScript, come out and we’ll be happy to get you going. If you’re a savvy developer who wants to learn about some of the particularities of mapping, we want you too! A laptop will be necessary for following along. If you don’t have access to one, feel free to contact us and we’ll work to hook you up with a computer for the meetup.

Jessi Breen is going to be walking us through the first steps of building a geostack. What does this mean? We’re gonna be downloading OSM data, styling it in TileMill and making some tiles!
Make sure you take care of the pre-meetup installs. The steps are outlined in Eric Theise’s “Let’s Talk about Your Geostack” slides. Additionally, you’ll need to install Virtual Box and Vagrant.
Space is limited so make sure you RSVP on Eventbrite.
As usual, you’ll need to bring a laptop. If you don’t have access to one, let us know (maptimelex@gmail.com) and we’ll be happy to work with you to get a hold of one for the evening.
We’re going to be doing something a little different for November’s. Instead of a maptimeLEX-only event, the meetup is being cross-promoted to other tech groups in Lexington, including LexLadiesCode. Past maptimeLEX attendee Mike Dillion (CirrusMio) is going to be giving an introduction to some of the key concepts behind git, a revision control system, and the popular software, Github. While, the discussion won’t be just about maps, Github offers lots of support and features that make it a great tool for hosting spatial data. You can even use it to make your own website to present your cartographic masterpieces! It all starts at 6:00 PM on Wednesday, November 19th at the Plantory. Space is limited so be sure to RSVP on Eventbrite. We hope to see you there!
maptimeLEX was again out at the monthly Night Market. Jessi Breen, Eric Huntley, and Ryan Cooper braved the cold weather to promote our November 19th meetup on git/Github at the Plantory and the November 22nd OpenStreetMap Editathon. We spent the evening doing live edits of OpenStreetMap which excited the curiosities of many passersby. Being strategically located next to the lusciously fragrant portajohns didn’t hurt either. And of course, we promoted maptimeLEX in style:
It was great chatting with folks from a variety of backgrounds and hope to see a few new faces at our upcoming meetups!
