We’ll be meeting in Minneapolis at CoCo Coworking in Uptown and have Howard Butler of hobu.co present on Pointclouds.
You have probably heard the words LiDAR and pointcloud, but may not know exactly what they are or what you could do with them. It used to be that you needed a really expensive sensor to collect data like that. Now, anyone with a reasonably good digital camera and the right software can capture this kind of data. 3D data can be used for everything from watershed analysis and measuring volumes to generate models with 3D printers.
Point clouds are quickly becoming another fundamental data type in a geo practitioner’s tool box. We will discuss how geo persons should expect to use freely available point clouds and show open source software to do all sorts of interesting things with them.
After the presentation, we’ll have time for discussions, sharing projects that we’re working on, work through any questions from our projects, and anything else that comes up!
We’ll have pizza and refreshments, courtesy of CartoDB. As always, beginners are welcome and don’t forget to bring a laptop!
We’ll be meeting in St. Paul in the Highland Park Library’s Community Room (located on the 2nd floor) and have some great presentations on resources and maps to get you started on some current, and future projects.
Mike Dolbow will show us Census Reporter, how to get to Census data fast, and make a map within minutes! Ryan Mattke will also be presenting on Census Data Visualizations, in particular with GIS data and historical maps!
After the presentations, we’ll discuss some highlights from the 2015 NACIS conference in Minneapolis, our favorite resources, and maps together!

August’s meeting will feature a Collaborative Work Session focused on the 2015 NACIS Map. We’ll work through Git, GitHub, and work together to add more points of interest to the map! In addition to working on the NACIS map, we welcome you to bring along any of your projects to showcase to other Maptime attendees, ask questions, and get feedback from others!

July Maptime is all about Git, Github, and how we can use these tools to collaborate on map projects. We’ll cover the basics of using Github, and then dive into our first official Maptime MSP group project: an interactive welcome map for the attendees of NACIS 2015.
We’ll be in a new location this month: Highland Park Library in St. Paul. Due to library hours, we’ll be starting our meeting 30 minutes earlier than usual: 5:30 - 7:30pm in the Community Room.
