Maptime

Maptime: Make a Map Already

This time we’re hands on - it’s a full on hack night. We’ll review some previous presentations (anatomy of a web map, leaflet basics) and partner up.

Bring a computer and by the end of the session you’ll have published a map. On the internet. With all the tricks we’ve been learning. Hooray!

Tools we’ll be using:

  • github & github pages
  • html & css
  • leaflet.js

Beginners welcome.

As always, we’ll continue our show & tell of interesting projects and blogs. If you have any links you’d like to share send them to maptimenola@gmail.com or tweet them to @maptimenola (or remember them).

See you soon! Pizza @ 6, tutorial @ 7.

Let’s make some maps!

Maptime: Leaflet.js, An Introduction

Huzzah! You asked, we arranged. On Oct 14th MaptimeNOLA will take it’s first look at Leaflet, an open-source JavaScript library for mobile-friendly interactive maps.

I’m very pleased to have Darin Acosta joining us to share some of his experience in developing the New Orleans Short Term Rental Report. We’ll get to see the process of how the data flows from Airbnb and HomeAway and onto the front-end map interface with Leaflet.

He’ll also share a little bit about a project he’s been working on German Coast that explores Leaflet as a story telling device with dynamic map events. He’s done some great work. Check out his portfolio to see what he can do (so we can ask him more questions!!)

As always, we’ll continue our show & tell of interesting projects and blogs. If you have any links you’d like to share send them to maptimenola@gmail.com or tweet them at @maptimenola (or remember them).

See you soon! Pizza @ 6, tutorial @ 7.

P.S. we’re looking for more skill-share presenters! If you’ve got some map-related skills you’re excited to share let us know and we can get ya up on the calendar.

Maptime: OpenStreetMap

Hey guys, it’s about time for our third maptime!

Join us next Wednesday at LaunchPad as Matt shares what he knows about OpenStreetMap, a collaborative project to make a free editable map of the world. For those interested in getting some hands-on experience, bring a laptop and we’ll be happy to get you set up to do your first (or next) OSM edit.

After the presentation, we’ll be troubleshooting as a group how to find and upload local 3D building data to OSMbuildings. That’s right. 3D Data. We’ll try to add heights for buildings in the CBD or French Quarter and then when we’re done, boom, we’ll have our own pretty 3D map. If you’ve got any good ideas for a source of building height data bring ‘em!

As always, we’ll continue our show & tell of interesting projects and blogs. If you have any links you’d like to share send them to maptimenola@gmail.com or tweet them at @maptimenola (or remember them).

Maptime: What is a Web Map?

Join us Wednesday for our second maptime! We’ll continue our show & tell of interesting projects and blogs while we dive into an introductory tutorial on the anatomy of a web map. If you have any links you’d like to share send them to maptimenola@gmail.com or tweet them at @maptimenola (or remember them)

For those interested in getting some hands-on experience, bring a laptop and we can introduce you to a few free web mapping platforms. As always, feel free to bring your own dataset to work with or we can troubleshoot as a group how to get some of those open nola.gov data sets up and visualized on a web map.

Pizza arrives at 6pm, tutorials begin at 7. See you there!

Maptime: B.Y.O.B

This Maptime thing is just what it sounds like: a time for maps. ALL THINGS MAPS. Yes. That covers a lot. We’ll be meeting every 2nd Wednesday.

For our very first Maptime in New Orleans, we’d like everyone to bring their favorite map tech & cartography books (or blogs) for show and tell. Raise your geo-geek flag high. Show us what you’re into - we’re probably into it, too.

We’ll compile a list of online and print resources to nerd out on while we meet other mappers in our community and snack on some pizza (thanks, CartoDB!) If you bring a laptop, one of us will be happy to get you set up on one of the many free map making tools available.

You can bring your own projects to work on, help others get started on theirs, or bring forward a topic for a future tutorial.

Questions? email maptimenola@gmail.com and check maptime.io/nola for updates once I learn how to update a jekyll website.

(see, you don’t have to know an ounce of tech to start learning)
