The Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team (HOT) has activated and is currently responding to Hurricane Matthew, you can read more about this important work here

For Maptime this week, we’ll help work on the top tasks for Hurricane Matthew: http://tasks.hotosm.org/

New to OpenStreetMap? Perfect! Experienced in humanitarian mapping? Perfect!

This will be an interactive, hands-on Mapathon, so please bring a computer to participate. Beginners welcome!

To learn more about remote tracing in OpenStreetMap, see the [remote tracing guide here] (http://learnosm.org/en/coordination/remote-tracing/)

A guide for tonight

Look forward to seeing everybody Wednesday!

PS: Some people really enjoy using a separate, external mouse instead of a trackpad for this type of work, so consider bringing one if you have one!

OpenStreetMap II: Using OSM Data

This is Part 2 of our 3 Part OSM Series…. the data

If you didn’t make it to part 1 last month… don’t worry, you should still come!

If you have a favorite map / project that uses OSM data, comment here, and we’ll share them to kick off the meeting!

After that, we’ll be going through a few different methods of extracting/obtaining OSM data and some of the neat things you can do with it.

If you’d like to follow along, please bring your computer, I hope this will be a hands-on interactive demo. We’ll likely use QGIS, so if you don’t have that installed yet, you can do so here: https://www.qgis.org/en/site/forusers/download.html

Resources We’ll Be Using

  1. Mapzen’s Metro Extracts:
    • Up-to-date extracts of various cities across the world.
    • You can also request extracts for custom areas.
  2. Overpass Turbo
    • A powerful query tool built against the Overpass API to extract specific data.
  3. Locally in QGIS
    • Recent versions of QGIS can pull the data in. This may or may not be separate from the QuickOSM Plugin
  4. Does anybody else use a different tool?

Community Mapping

What is community mapping? How do you do it? What is it good for? These are some of the questions that we will work through these questions in more. We will use housing in Boulder as a topic to ground our efforts.

This will be a hands-on, mixed media event so bring whatever you will need to make a map!

Presenter: Joe Bryan, Assistant Professor, Geography, CU Boulder

Joe has worked on participatory mapping projects with indigenous peoples in the US, Nicaragua, Honduras, and Mexico. In addition to his work with communities, he is the co-author with Denis Wood of Weaponizing Maps: Indigenous Peoples and Counterinsurgency, along with numerous articles on indigenous politics and participatory mapping.

Falling Fruit

On this off-week meeting, the co-founder of Falling Fruit will be talking about this project as well as some work looking at rooftop solar capacity (which will be a nice follow-up to the Digital Globe presentation on 4/21!)

This is a combined meeting with a geo-spatial analysis course at the University, so we will have a good crowd, hope everyone can join us to learn about mapping the Urban Harvest!
