Maptime

QGIS 101

Love maps? Want to learn to make your own? Or perhaps you have been using ArcGIS for years but want to know what else is out there. Join us to learn about QGIS, a free, open-source mapping software.

We’ll learn from @Robin about getting started with QGIS. We’ll walk through downloading data from Natural Earth and then getting started with making your own map. Or feel free to bring whatever data you want to map, and we’ll go through how QGIS works.

The library provides some laptops, but if you want to bring your own, feel free to do so. If you do, we recommend downloading QGIS ahead of time.

Aspiring mapmakers of all levels welcome, including beginners! Be sure to follow us on Twitter @MaptimeMadison to find out about future events.

Everyone is welcome and encouraged to join in on the fun!

###Supplies Bring a laptop if you want to use your own, otherwise we will have some to borrow. If you already have QGIS installed, great! If not, try and download ahead of time.

Easy data viz with CartoDB!

###Event Recap We hosted our first meeting in 2015 on CartoDB, an online data vizualization and mapping software.

@Katie talked about the basics of mapping through CartoDB and how to get around the website and the different ways you can use this service for manipulating data and visualizing it.

If you missed out on joining us at the Bubbler for learning about CartoDB, you can view the slides and outline here on our GitHub. We also have a fabulous tutorial, created by @Chris available here that goes more in depth about CartoDB’s advanced SQL features.

###Next Maptime! Thank you to everyone who came out last night! We will be meeting next on March 11th, to learn about QGIS with @Robin. Join our mailing list or follow us on Twitter @Maptime Madison for more news!

Learn CartoDB

Do you want to make your own cool, interactive online map? Come to Maptime Madison this Thursday and learn how to create easy interactive maps! At this month’s Maptime, we’ll learn about CartoDB, a cloud-based mapping platform that is easy for beginners but also provides advanced functionality for mapping and programming pros. We’ll learn from @KatieKowalsky about getting started with interactive maps.

Check out the CartoDB gallery to see the types of maps that people are making with this platform. Then you’ll get a chance to make your own map, either using your own data or we will provide some. The library provides some laptops, but if you want to bring your own, feel free to do so. Aspiring mapmakers of all levels welcome, including beginners! Mapping The World with OSM

###Event Recap For our second Maptime Madison we dove in to online mapping with Open Street Map, learning about not only how to edit and add to OSM but also how to aid in the response to disasters and crises.

picture of Ethan talking
@Ethan talked about the importance of @Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team’s (HOT) work to respond to humanitarian disasters and how to join in on the mapping to provide a more accurate and detailed map for aid workers. Ethan also made a task in OSM Task Manager to map Madison.

picture of Carl talking
@Carl went over the basics of how to edit the OSM Map. Carl also taught us about attribute tagging and OSM data structure.

We then had time to edit OSM, where some people chose a HOT Task while others filled in information about Madison and their neighborhoods. It was great fun editing and chatting with everyone about OSM.

If you missed out on joining us at the Bubbler for OSM mapping, you can view the slides and outline here on our GitHub.

###Next Maptime! Thank you to everyone who came out last night! We are looking forward to meeting up again at the end of January or early February. Where @Katie will be giving a presentation on CartoDB. Join our mailing list or follow us on Twitter @Maptime Madison for the announcement! More information to come soon!

At this month’s Maptime, we’ll learn about @OpenStreetMaps, a free and editable map of the world (think Google Maps meets Wikipedia). We’ll learn from @Ethan about the @Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team’s work to respond to humanitarian disasters and then Carl will teach us how to edit the map ourselves. Then we’ll get to work and all edit OSM together! Be sure to follow us on Twitter to find out about future events: @Maptime Madison.
