Howdy Maptimers,
We’ve finally found a venue that can host us, and a lot of us too! We are really excited, and we’re thinking you might be excited too. Having a free and reserved space at UBC allows us to create some regularity in our sessions, so you will be hearing from us a bit more frequently in the next weeks.
For our first Maptime of 2016, we are going to make a story with maps. Using some CSS and Javascript, sprinkled with some html and a pinch of detective work, you will come from our tutorial with you very own map.
One example of what we will be teaching, can be found here
If you think it looks complicated, don’t worry - we will be there to guide you through it. After all, “the reason why the web has progressed so quickly is because people have gotten really good at taking other people’s html/css/javascript code and building ontop of it. Instead of re-inventing the wheel, we’ve been able to learn from the work of others.
If we can begin deconstructing and reconstructing the elements of other people’s web projects, we learn through this process of making and breaking in ways we previously might not have been able to do.” (from the online tutorial)
Maptime Organizer Joey Lee will lead the stellar tutorial he has made for the occasion. As always, beginners are very welcome at Maptime, and we will always take the time to answer your questions.
When 7.00 - 9.00 Monday February 22nd
Where Koerner Library, UBC, room 153

Bring a friend and come to Maptime - we are looking forward to seeing you there!
Eeearly on Saturday morning, Maptime HQ invited organizers worldwide to a hangout in Slack and on Google Hangout. So many screens. We talked about successes (your enthusiasm) and challenges (finding a free space to organize, and increasing the frequency of meetings), and received a ton of new ideas for going ahead (exiting new software, mapping tutorials, missing mapathons, video instructions and so much more).
As Maptime Vancouver organizers we have been scratching our heads trying to find a free, large spave, and we have decided that while we dont have an ideal spot for hosting Maptime, it is worse to not host Maptime at all.
Therefore we will shortly be posting info about our next Maptime meeting. Stay tuned - your patience will be rewarded!
Maptime is for everyone regardless of background and technical skill. Maptime is for you! We welcome anyone wanting to share, learn, and teach anything related to cartography. We’d love to see your face at our next meetup. More info coming soon!
Thanks to all of you who came out to our November maptime. We were happy to see that you’re still interested in learning about Maps! Many thanks also, to Mark and Konkurito, for providing us with the space to meet.
Some faces were new, and some faces were familiar, and we enjoyed seeing all of you!
Joey led us through an introduction to CartoDB, where we learned the basic of a webmap, and how to use web-based tools, aaand got the low-down on what kinds of complaints the city of Vancouver has to deal with. If you’re interested in what we talked about, check out Joey’s tutorial here.
We have received questions and requests for future workshops, and we greatly appreciate your input - it makes our task easier, and more meaningful. If you have any questions or comments, tweet us @maptimeYVR!

We know we’ve been quiet, but that ends now! Maptime Vancouver is back on track, with some exciting new changes. First of all, we are happy to announce that Joey Lee is joining our organizing team, bringing plenty of mapping experience, fresh ideas and a patent smile to the mix.
We’ve also changed locations: Maptime will now take place in Railtown, in an office space generously opened to us by Mark at Konkurito. Thanks Mark!
While we’ve been lazying around, we’ve noticed that you’ve been doing quite the opposite. You’ve been patient, and for that we are grateful. Our group has grown, and there are now 177 Maplovers in our group. That’s exciting!
To bring you light in the fall, we plan to kick off the #MaptimeYVR season with:
